If you truly want to defend yourself, you need to know how to protect yourself on the ground. It has been shown countless times that a smaller, weaker person will be forced to the ground — intentionally or accidentally — when attacked by a larger, stronger assailant. With Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu it is not only possible to survive such situations, but to gain control and ultimately force the attacker into submission or unconsciousness.
Brazilian or “Gracie” Jiu-Jitsu is a martial art that was created by the Gracie family of Brazil in the earlier 20th century. What started as a form of Japanese jujutsu and judo evolved into a unique system as the founders of the art further refined the techniques, combat theories and strategies. The Gracies are famous for fighting many “vale tudo” (no rules) matches against other martial artists, and it was through these fights that Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu developed as a system of using leverage and superior position to subdue and defeat much heavier and stronger opponents. Today Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is the premiere grappling and ground fighting art in the world, and a must for self defense, law enforcement and mixed martial arts competition.
What sets Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu apart from other martial arts is its emphasis on practicality and real-world performance. Your child is not going to memorize forms or kata, dead patterns. They aren’t going to learn to chop and kick the air or break boards. They are going to learn realistic and proven techniques for self defense — just like adults — in a fun, friendly and safe environment.
The team of instructors at Terra Guerra Jiu Jitsu are led by four stripe black belt professor Joshua Miller. Joshua first opened Gracie Barra CSRA in 2005. His career in Jiu-Jitsu began upon meeting four stripe black belt Eduardo de Lima when de Lima first came to the US to open a Gracie Barra facility in the Tampa, Florida area. Joshua was a black belt in Shotokan Karate at the time, but was soon training under de Lima. He was awarded his Brown belt after winning the Tampa International in 2006, and earned his Black belt in 2008. Joshua also won the Gold at the Florida Open, and Bronze at the Pan American Games. He has trained at Gracie Barra Rio, as well as Gracie Barra America in Wake Forrest, California, and has coached multiple athletes to medal and win the Pan American and World Championship, as well as Pro and Amateur MMA.
Joshua has a Bachelor's degree in Nursing as well as an Associate degree in Emergency Medical Service, with experience in a level one trauma center ER and in a Critical Care Unit. Additionally, he served in the Fire Department for 10 years and has flight nurse experience.
